About Me & This Blog

I grew up outside of a mid-sized blue-collar American city.   I attended a small liberal arts college where I received lots of practical experience in acting, directing and lighting design.  Most of my experience has been in classical theatre, which is where a large part of my interest lies.  For the past 10 years I have acted in major US markets and toured the country.   Now I live and work in a small regional market. I am EMC, and Alceste is not my real name.

I BELIEVE...*

... in regional theatre - although it has not gone far enough.  Theatres in even smaller communities with resident companies of professional, well-paid actors are possible and necessary to Theatre's survival.

... theatres that take care of their community will be taken care of by their community

... low tech is better

... theatre is a unique medium, and as such should not attempt to compete with television and movies.  Such competition shows a lack of understanding of theatre's purpose and role in society on behalf of both the theatre and its audience

... Show Business and Theatre are two different things

... alcohol should be allowed in theatres

... the entire institution of internships in modern American Theatre must be rethought

...THE DEADLY THEATRE by Peter Brook is the most inportant piece written about theatre in the 20th century

*This list will be added to and edited as my point of view changes and new beliefs grow.  To quote Peter Brook:  "Don't take it too seriously.  Hold on tightly, let go lightly."
